Campbelltown Celebrates

On the 31st January 2010 the Campbelltown community celebrated the dedication and renaming of Padulesi Park by Campbelltown Council's Sister City visitors from Paduli (Italy) and Oyster Bay (New York), and the launch of 'Campbelltown Made' by the South Australian Premier Mike Rann.

'Campbelltown Made' promotes Council's unique identity and local produce and will continue to build synergies with local industries. The program incorporates the 'Flavours of Campbelltown' Food Trail which highlights the many locally produced food products in Campbelltown.

And Campbelltown City Band was there to bring the 'flavours of the world' in music to the start of the day. Music played included "Yellow Mountains" from the USA, "The Territorians" and "City of Lights" from Australia, and "Deep Harmony" from the UK. The only thing missing for this particular audience would have been some Italian tunes.

While the author usually plays BB Bass in the back row, I had the opportunity to listen to the band from the audience on this occasion and I am proud of the great sound of the band and the marked improvement that has been made by all players under the careful encouragement and direction of Music Director, Al Kidney.

New Musical Director Mitcham City Band

Mitcham City Brass is pleased to announce the appointment Steven Packer as its musical director.

Steven comes to us with a wealth of experience having served as a musician in the Australian and New Zealand Navy Bands for 19 years, and with exceptional success as a solo musician.

Steven joined the Royal Australian Navy as a musician in 1987 playing euphonium, bass trombone, saxophone and tuba. He toured with the Navy Band to Singapore, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Pakistan, Malaysia and New Zealand. He trained extensively in music studies during his time at the Defence Force School of Music earning himself a Bachelor in music. He rose the to the level of Petty Officer prior to leaving the Australian Navy in 1998.

Some of his highlights during this time were arranging music and playing for the Pope on his 1995 visit to Sydney, visiting Gallipoli on its 75th anniversary in 1990, participating the 1995 Adelaide Military Tattoo, and recording a CD with Don Burrows.

After leaving the Australian Navy Steven moved to Mildura where he was appointed the Musical Director of the Mildura District Brass Band. Under his baton the band rose from D grade to C grade. During this time he also taught music in many of the local schools.

In 2002 Steven decided to return to life on the ocean wave and joined the New Zealand Navy as a musician. He served until late 2009.

As a solo musician Steven has seen many successes winning Australian Champion on Bass Trombone in 1999, Australian Champion on Eb Bass (tuba) 1997, 2006 and 2007 and taking second place in the Eb Bass Australian championship in 1996 and 1998. He won Eb Bass, euphonium, baritone and bass trombone at the prestigious South Street competitions in Ballarat. Incredibly he won on all these separate instruments on the same day!.

Outside of music Steven’s interests are paddle steamers on the Murray River, fishing, lawn bowls, cricket and golf.

Steven has decided to return to Adelaide having been away from his extended family for the last 23 years. He is excited about his appointment as the Musical Director for Mitcham City Brass. He hopes that the band will increase its activity both within the Mitcham community and further abroad. He also plans to reinstate the Junior Band. Steven believes that Mitcham City Brass has amazing potential and is looking forward to the journey that lies ahead.

If there is anyone in the community, young or old who would like to play with Mitcham City Brass or would like to learn a brass instrument, please contact our secretary Tamina via e-mail secretary@mitchamcitybrass.org .

Australia Day in Campbelltown

2010 saw a change of format for these celebrations and a most successful move it was. The separation of the Naturalisation Ceremony from the Campbelltown Citizen of the Year awards meant a much more relaxed atmosphere. Being in the morning too, rather than an evening event, was also a big plus - well at least for the band members.

The Campbelltown City Band, under the leadership of Deputy Musical Director Chris Brockhouse, provided some entertaining music as people arrived. The raising of the flag was of course the main part of this celebration along with the singing of the National Anthem.

In another change for 2010, the nominations for each citizenship award were read out so even though there was only one winner in each category those nominated could also be acknowledged. Nice short speeches of recognition and thanks, shade and seats for guests and band, and an open air venue meant this was a most enjoyable way to start Australia Day.

The band then provided more rousing music to finish the celebrations and then tucked into the sausage sizzled provided by the Council.

NBCA NOVEMBER CONFERENCE HERALDS CHANGE

NBCA NOVEMBER CONFERENCE HERALDS CHANGE

NATIONAL BAND COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA
30 November 2009

NBCA NOVEMBER CONFERENCE HERALDS CHANGE

The National Band Council of Australia convened in Melbourne last weekend to discuss specific issues related to the future conduct and organisation of the Australian National Band Championships and the forward direction of banding throughout Australia.

Two new State councillors, Annette Ries (President of the Queensland Band Association) and Patricia Keep (Treasurer of the South Australian Band Association and Chair of the SABA Organising Committee for the 2011 Nationals) were welcomed to the NBCA.

The conference agenda focused discussion across a wide range of issues including the uniform registration of players in all state associations, the on-stage contest program at the National Championships, time limits of major works, the use of test pieces for band and solo section, the Parade of Bands, and the impact of key logistic and financial aspects on organising state associations. In addition, issues beyond the scope of the National Championships were discussed including NBCA strategic and operational planning, marketing, policy making, the role of the NBCA Music Consultative Committee, NBCA liaison with state bodies, and the profile of banding with audiences, sponsors, and the various from s of media.

The President of the NBCA, Kevin Cameron, has released the following statement:

Last weekend’s very successful NBCA Conference was a positive and affirming development for banding in Australia. The National Councillors, state association observers, and members of the NBCA Executive approached the discussions with mutual goodwill and a common desire to achieve the best outcomes for banding. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank my NBCA colleagues for their involvement, the sharing of their broad skills and experience, and their valuable guidance.

Much discussion and debate focussed on the need to develop a consistent approach to registration across all state associations so that all bands attending the National Championships will meet each other within parameters of fairness, consistency, and transparency. A new set of draft registration by-laws was created and these will be released shortly for wider consideration. It is my hope that state associations will discuss the implications of these new rules with their people with a view to us having a consistent approach to registration in place before the 2011 National Championships.

The Minutes of the Conference will be posted on the NBCA website before Christmas. In all, a total of 50 separate issues were discussed and suggested ways forward determined. These recommendations will be discussed by state associations in the first part of next year with a view to achieving consensus at the next NBCA Conference scheduled for July 2010. Now that the NBCA, in collaboration with the state associations, has suggested the way forward we must ensure that our people are aware of the issues and the rationale for change. Although change is often difficult and uncomfortable, we must embrace developments that sustain and develop the potentia and good health of our movement into the future. We must move forward together.

I encourage those interested in the forward progression of banding to read the Plenary Paper for this conference (widely available from the state associations), watch for additional information as it becomes available, and ensure that each band sends delegates to any meetings convened to discuss the recommendations that have resulted from the conference discussions.

I commend this successful NBCA initiative to our banding movement and look forward to positive debate and fruitful outcomes.
