]]> Thu, 11 Nov 2010 23:34:08 +1030 Champion of Champions 2010 http://www.sabandassociation.org/ This year’s Champion of Champions was held in the Chapel at Prince Alfred College. George Burton was the Master of Ceremonies, after welcoming everyone he introduced the Junior Brass section. First was Matthew Dorey playing ‘Badinage’ by Eugene Bozza on the cornet. Charlie Thomas played ‘Concerto for Trombone’ by George Wagenseil. Then Emily Legg treated us to ‘Beelzebub’ by A. Catozzi on the Eb bass.

 

In the Senior Concert section Nicole Molloy played ‘Sonatina’ by Matinu on the clarinet, Sarah Byron played ‘Pequena Czarda’ on the saxophone and Lisa Blinco played Andante for flute and orchestra by Mozart.

 

The final section was the Senior Brass; Mark Smith started it off with ‘Concert Piece’ by Brandt on the Flugel horn. Next Karina Filipi entertained us with ‘Three Miniatures’ by Anthony Plog on the Eb Tuba, followed by Peter Doherty playing ‘Concertino’ by Lars-Erik Larsson on the trombone. ‘I love him better every day’ by W. Stevenson was played by Colin Smith on the soprano cornet. Steven Packer played ‘Variations for Ophicleide’ by Kummer on the euphonium. The final contestant was Kevin Joughin on the cornet playing ‘Rustiques’ by Eugene Bozza.

 

Adjudicator Daryl Pope was impressed by the standard and found selecting the champions difficult. Emily Legg was adjudged the Junior Champion, Sarah Byron the Concert Band Champion and Karina Filipi the Brass Band Champion.

 

Brendan Kenny, the SABA Secretary, presented the trophies.

The band led the parade which saw the bride and groom arrive in a horse drawn carriage and 100+ guests milling around. The band played several marches and slowly led the way through the park in the beautiful sun shine. A great morning was had by all especially the band who enjoyed the colour and fun of the event.

This concert will be held in the auditorium at The Corner Uniting Church, Cnr of Diagonal and Oaklands Roads, Warradale from 7:30 to 9:30pm on Saturday 26th June 2010.

It will be held in the Salisbury Central hall in 17-19 Wiltshire Street Salisbury on Saturday 31st July 2010. 7pm till 11.30pm approx.

It will not be confined to Brass or Orchestral only. Any instrumentation from e.g.: - a Spoon ensemble to a Ruritanian Nose Flute group may participate! All are welcome.

The only requirement will be for you to organize yourselves into smallish varying size ensembles of players that can move on or off the stage with as little fuss and time as possible. Please bring your own music stands.

The format for the evening will be BYO food and drink and the entry fee will be a Gold Coin Donation only. (Tea & Coffee will be provided)

Would you please reply by email as soon as possible with details of ensemble sizes that may be performing and supporters attending, so that group tables and an approximate timetable of events can be arranged?

The next event for the Port Lincoln City Band is our "Dust off your instrument night" on May 31st.

Coming up we have a combined concert with the Port Lincoln Singers. - Spring into Song concert at the Nautilus Theatre September 12th, this show may be taken on the road to Cummins and Tumby bay in October, where the Band will combine with the Sing Australia groups of the region.


We are also performing at the Port Lincoln Show on August 15th and the Relay for Life on November 27th

Our music director, Mike Hester will be out of the country for a whole school term, so we have a temporary MD lined up, Stephen Campbell, also from the PL High School. It should be interesting times ahead!

After Warriparinga Brass won the C grade Junior Brass Band section, Unley Concert Band came 2nd in B grade Concert Bands and City of Holdfast Bay Concert Band came 2nd in C grade Concert Bands. Marion City Band came 3rd in the Brass Band Open C Grade but won the Open C Grade Street March section. Well done! Last night, 4th April, at the 2010 Nationals Gala Concert The NBCA Banner was passed to Patricia Keep, the chairperson of the 2011 organizing committee. The South Australian Australian Band Association is now officially responsible for the 2011 National Band Championships to be held in Adelaide next Easter.

The City of Adelaide Band is a friendly and vibrant concert band with approximately 35 players.  We play mainly in the city precinct, including our annual Fringe show and are supported by The Adelaide City Council.
 
Although welcoming to all musicians, we have particular vacancies for experienced musicians in the following areas;
 
 - Clarinet
 - Saxophone
 - Oboe
 - Bassoon
